Intervarsity Christmas Break!!

Despite the hectic conclusion to the semester here at Cooper Union, everyone had a great time building Graham cracker houses last Thursday, 12/15. It was a time to relax, drink milk and cookies, and focus every brain cell on a single task of building the best Graham cracker house!

The competition was fierce, ranging from exquisite M&M walkway castles, to rustic sprinkle covered 1830's town houses, to Big Red roofed suburban villas, to donut minarets, and even a slanted Twizzler bridge (slanted to add character, of course).

The MVP of this event goes hands down to Professor Wolf for his exceptional design work regarding to icing, wintergreen LifeSavers, and gum drops. He closely gathered ideas from fellow teammates and patented his own Graham cracker house!

The competition was judged by our honorable Dean Germano who had a keen eye for detail and a curious mind for knowing the background story to each design.

Operation Christmas Child Success!

Thank you everyone who made Operation Christmas Child possible!!!

It was quite a sight to see everyone help pack and wrap. Three faculty members joined us - Professors Ahmad (EE), Cumberbatch (EE), and Wolf (Physics)!

Let me thank you for your generosity. In an hour and a half, we packed 48 shoeboxes full of matchbox cars, combs, hair clips, notebooks, pens, pencils, crayons, soap, nick-nacks, toothbrushes, toothpaste, and more for 48 children in third-world countries for Christmas. Also, we collected $394, which was $58 more than we needed to ship the boxes off at $7/box. So we'll be donating the extra money to the organization who runs this operation. This has been our biggest success so far!

Amidst the turmoil that has blown through out school, we are called to serve the community as followers of Christ. Keep Cooper Union closely in your prayers!

President Bharucha announced last night in the Rose Auditorium that the school can not keep running an annual budget deficit of $16.5 million. He called for a Task Force to find alternative financial resources for the school.

Hi everyone!

Hope you all had a great summer! Welcome to another year at Cooper and
another wonderful year to be part of Intervarsity Christian Fellowship!

I'd like to start off the year with an uplifting passage from Psalm 125 (suggested by Neil).

We are now in the home stretch! With only a week and a half left, many of us feel under pressure to finish strong this semester. Let us not forget where our hope and strength comes from in such seemingly- overwhelming times:

"Our Hunger Prevention Program consists of a soup kitchen and food pantry, open every Saturday except the first Saturday of the month, from 10 to 11 AM, although we usually try to open earlier than 10 AM as the line waiting for us to open is very long. Approximately 400 people are fed in our soup kitchen during this time. "

Welcome back everyone. Hope you all enjoyed your break. This semester in Large group, we will focus on discovering God's purposes for our lives and understanding who God says we are.

Small groups are described below:

CHARACTER OF GOD with Caleb Tues | 6 | Menschel Rm
What kind of God do we serve? And why does it make a difference in our
lives? This will be a study on the character of God and how that should
change the way we live each day. We will talk about topics like God's
servanthood, forgiveness, love, beauty, righteousness, holiness, and
creativity and how they affect us. Have you ever wondered why a man dying
2000 years ago means you need to forgive people who hurt you? Or how
serving a holy God should change the way you interact with your friends?
Or maybe you just want to know what makes the God of Christianity
different than those from any other religion. Our small group will meet
every Monday at 6 PM in the Menschel room in a laid back environment where
you can ask these kinds of questions. You don't have to be a Christian to
come; in fact it would be awesome if you are not! Food, activities, and
discussion will all be included!

Smarty-pants! You know the works of Einstein, Euclid, and Van Gogh, but do
you know wisdom? We spend hours and hours at Cooper studying to gain the
knowledge of our fields and plan to become contributors to the future. Yet

shame the wise; God chose the weak things of the world to shame the
strong." So now what are we supposed to do? Is our education meaningless?
Or is there a way to fit together our knowledge with wisdom? Come on over

Hi all, just a friendly reminder that there is large group tomorrow (Thursday). Same time, same place. 5pm, room 104 in the NAB. This week we will be having Pastor Ron coming in to start us off on a series about who Jesus says he is. This week's topic is: I am the Bread of Life. It should be a very interesting message, so please come!

Another thing, the Amazing Race is this Saturday. If you don't know what it is, it's basically a race/competition around the city, going to multiple locations and performing different tasks. There will be prizes for the top two teams! Sign ups have been occurring this week and if you haven't signed up yet and would like to, it's not too late. Jason Gaboury, the NYC area director of Intervarsity will be coming in to speak to us. He will be explaining what Intervarsity is, why we exist, and what our vision is. Game Night and Large Group

Quite a few announcements today, so let's get started:

Wednesday -
Game Night! We are having a game night in the Menschel room (4th floor of the dorms). It starts at 8pm and will last probably until 10 or 11pm. I know everyone is busy and all this time of year, but it could be a good couple of hours just to unwind a bit. It'll be a good time to meet and interact with some of the freshmen. If you have board games, please bring them. Also, there will be food.

Thursday -
Large group as usual from 5-6pm in room 104 in the NAB. This week we will be raising awareness about the seriousness of several world issues (i.e. hunger, human trafficking, HIV/AIDS, etc.) We will also be learning about how we can help and get involved.

Friday -
This Friday is One Cry. One Cry is a huge gathering of NYC students for a time of prayer. The event is held at Times Square Church and will start at 7pm. I believe you need to register to get a spot inside the church, but if space has already run out, it shouldn't hold you back from praying anyway. Plus the event is supposed to be televised, so maybe you can find the channel and pray along with them.

May 15-20 -
Try and save these dates guys, because this is when Basileia is. What is Basileia? Basileia is a week-long conference for Intervarsity chapters. It is a great time for you to grow individually, for the chapter to grow closer together and plan for the next year, and for chapters to meet each other. Registration is now. Go.

Haiti Bake Sale

So as all of you know we had our Haiti bake sale this past Monday-Wednesday. Our original goal was to raise $200, but ended up raising more than $300!!! So thank you to all the people who baked, all the people who manned the table, and all the people who bought baked goods or just donated. As some of you know, we as a fellowship are going to match the amount raised and donate it to World Vision, who will then triple the total amount, and use it toward short-term and long-term Haiti earthquake relief. So all in all, that will be $1800+ going toward Haiti!

There are also a few things to look forward to next week. As always, there are small groups on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday. There is large group on Thursday, there is no speaker, but we have a few things planned. And lastly, there is another volunteering opportunity on Saturday, more information about that later.

Alright guys, lots of announcements today. First of all, there is large group tomorrow 5-6 pm in room 104. Pastor Harvey Auger will be coming in to speak on Colossians 2:6-12.

Secondly, there is volunteering this Saturday with Father's Heart ministry which is just a couple of blocks away from school. So please come out for that.

Thirdly, we are having a Haiti bake sale! The bake sale will be on 02/22-24, that is Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday of next week. All proceeds will go to World Vision's Haiti Relief. It would be really great if you could bake something, or if you can bake, you can also buy something for the bake sale. Hello all and welcome back to another semester of Cooper. I hope you all had good breaks and I hope you're all ready for another great semester of Cooper Union Intervarsity Christian Fellowship as we have lots of great things planned.

Our theme: A Calling to "Missions"

As Christians who have understood and received the gospel of Jesus, it is our calling to spread the good news that Jesus brought to us. Remember, our vision is to see students and faculty transformed, to see our campus renewed, and to see the world changed. This semester we hope to better understand our calling and our vision and how we can live it out.

For large group this semester, we're doing things a little bit differently from last semester. Approximately every other week we will have a speaker come in and cover some scripture like we usually do. The speakers will be focusing on first few chapters of John. For the other weeks, we will be having some sort of outreach activity to try to build up our group.

Operation Christmas Child: Success!

Alright, Operation Christmas Child was a success! We ended up packing around 45 boxes, which is a lot more than what were aiming for. Special thanks to Cooper Hillel for supplying a bunch of goodies and special thanks to Amanda for supplying many of the shoe boxes. And of course, much thanks to everyone who showed up to help pack and wrap boxes, even Professor Ahmad showed up for a few minutes. I pray that those boxes will find their way to some needy children and that it will make a lasting impact on their lives. Once again, thank you to everyone who took a small amount of their time to make this possible for those children around the world.

Operation Christmas Child

Hello everybody! Very important announcement today. For large group this week, we will be packing shoe boxes for Operation Christmas Child. What is Operation Christmas Child you say? Well, it is a ministry of Samaritan's Purse where people pack shoe boxes full of goodies and send them off to needy children all around the world. Now, what can you put in these shoe boxes? You can put in toys, school supplies, hygiene items, hard candy, personal notes, etc. If you want to pack items for a specific gender and age that's ok too. We thought it would be a good idea to get Cooper Union involved in this as well and we need your help. If you wish to participate, please come to our large group on Thursday at 5 pm in room 104. Bring shoe boxes and goodies to put in the shoe boxes if you can, if not then just come and help pack. Don't you want to put a smile on a child's face?

Hey all, for large group this week we will be talking about relationships. Pastor Bruce will be coming in to speak on the importance of relationships, what it means to be part of a community, and other such topics. As always, large group will be meeting on Thursday, room 104, 5-6pm.

In other news, for those of you who didn't know, 10 of us went to Big Event over the past weekend. It was lots of fun, we met a lot of people from other schools, and we all took home something different. Mostly importantly though, as a group we came together and renewed our vision for our Intervarsity chapter. Our vision is to see students and faculty transformed, campuses renewed, and world changers developed. I hope everyone remembers that and joins with us to achieve that vision.

For those of you who don't go to small group because you aren't sure what they are, this will give you a taste of what it's like, and hopefully it'll encourage you to regularly attend one of the small groups. So just a reminder, large group is tomorrow, Thursday, at 5pm in room 104. Additionally, the three small groups meet on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Wednesdays, all starting around 6:15pm; please go to the weekly meetings tab for more info on them.

Pastor Leo's Creation Evolution Message

Pastor Leo Kim's message on creation and evolution was very interesting, to say the least. When we think about evolution, it is generally perceived to be the antithesis of religion. Pastor Leo argued that not only does the theory of evolution fail to disprove the existence of God; it in fact provides strong evidence in favor of God’s existence if it is true. His message was divided into three parts: The “problem” between evolution and the existence of God, why this isn’t really a problem, and why we came up with the contradiction to begin with.

Pastor Leo started out with the assumption that evolution is true. The reason that evolution is generally considered to be a problem for the existence of God is twofold. First, the existence of evolution as a theory finally provided a reasonable, scientific explanation for the diversity of species on earth, where God was no longer a necessary entity. Second, the creation story in Genesis seems to contradict the theory because of how it says that God created the world in seven days and created humans in his image.

Still reasoning under the assumption that evolution is true, Pastor Leo proposed a thought experiment. One main reason people think that God does not exist is because we can’t see him through any scientific method. However, could a character in a story find the author of the story? The only way Hamlet could ever know Shakespeare existed is if Shakespeare wrote himself into the story. If God created the mechanism by which the universe works, he wouldn’t have to step in to correct his creation, because he created it just right the first time. The only way we could know of his existence is if he decided to write himself into the universe.

As Pastor Leo noted, this in no way disproves the existence of God. In fact, if evolution is true, then it makes even more sense for God to exist. Most scientists agree that the entire universe seems to be fine-tuned for life. One example is the gravitational constant. If it was even a tiny fraction larger, the big bang would have collapsed inward upon itself. Likewise, if it were a fraction smaller, the big bang would have exploded too quickly and would not have allowed for stars and galaxies to form. This fragility of the universe indicates towards something more than chance that led the universe to form in such a way as to support complex life. In fact, the prior scientific theory that the universe was omnipresent was in direct contradiction with the Bible, which specifically says that God created the universe, so it must have had a beginning. Hence, contrary to popular belief, the big bang theory is far more in line with scriptures than the previous paradigm was.

He then asked, if evolution does not disprove God’s existence, and in fact provides support for his existence, then why did we come to believe that it does? He explained that humans have always wanted to distance themselves from God. The reason for this is because if there is a God, and he designed us for a purpose, then our primary purpose cannot be our own purpose, but his purpose instead. As Nietzsche put it, “I will now disprove the existence of all gods. If there were gods, how could I bear not to be a god? Consequently, there are no gods”. It is in our nature to want to be in control.

In conclusion, whether or not evolution is relevant, it cannot be used as a way to disprove the existence of God.

Amazing Race complete!

Yesterday was the Amazing Race and six teams showed up to compete for the prize. The race had the contestants running all around lower Manhattan, performing multiple tasks along the way. The race started out pretty even, but the search for chicken and rice stands proved to be difficult at 11 in the morning on a Saturday. A couple of teams quickly found three chicken and rice stands and moved on in the race, while others looked in all the wrong places and fell behind first place by 20 minutes. Luckily, the pit stop at Madison Square Park erased most of the deficits and staggered the teams by a minute. The race was more or less decided though at the stop in Josh's apartment where teams were required to build marshmallow towers. Again, some teams proved to be more clever in their tower's structure, while others had difficulty getting theirs to stand. After that point, it was more or less a foot race back to the finish. The speedy team consisting of Joe, Peter, and Jake soon found themselves in a comfortable lead measuring Abe's door with a toothpick while the other five teams were still lagging behind at the park on 17th street transferring water into cups with paper towels. The lead proved to be too great as they rushed back to school before even an Intervarsity member could make it back to meet them at the finish line. So congratulations to Joe, Peter, and Jake, the winners of the Amazing Race! The prize is a $25 gift certificate to each of them from the restaurant/store of their choice. Second and third place teams will also receive similar smaller prizes. If you are entitled to a prize, Josh will contact you soon, if he has not done so already. Thanks to all those who participated and we hope to see you at our future events!

Amazing Race

Hello everybody. The Amazing Race will be on Saturday, September 19 at 10 am. Sorry for all those who signed up and thought it was tomorrow, but due to the high chance of rain, we decided to postpone the event by a week. For those of you who don't know what this event is, let me explain a bit. Basically, you will be working in teams and traveling around the city to specific points. However at each of these points, your team will be asked to complete certain tasks in order to receive the location of the next point of the race. There will be prizes for the first and second place winning teams. First place winners will each receive a $25 gift certificate toward the store/restaurant of their choice. Second place winner will each receive a $10 gift certificate. And even if you don't win one of the prizes, this could be a good chance to meet some new people, see the city, and even get some exercise. So come on out and join us in the Amazing Race, sign-ups will be in the lobby of the New Academic Building, so look out for us if you want to join. Remember, it's on Saturday, September 19 at 10 am, meet up in front of the NAB.

Auction Night was a hit!

Hey all, so we had a pretty good turn-out for auction night, about 30-40 freshmen showed up to the event and the room was pretty full. The night started out a little slow, but thanks to Daniel W. and Abe, who went to each room in the dorm to invite the freshmen, lots of people started showing up. As freshmen came in, they were handed a bundle of 20 crisp, fresh Intervarsity dollars (aka Renoj dollars), for the bidding. After a few items were auctioned off, we handed out a short 5-question quiz to allow the freshmen to earn up to another 10 dollars for bidding. With their new found wealth, the bidding wars quickly escalated as most items were redeemed for more than $20. After the night was over, a few of freshmen stuck around to talk to us and to have some pizza and soda. One of the freshmen even facebooked all of us on the spot. So all in all, I think it was a rather successful night and everyone had fun.

Move-in a success!

Hello everybody! Just wanted to let you all know that the freshmen move-in went very well. We all got to talk a bit to the new students and their parents and I think it made the whole move-in experience a lot more welcoming for them. After we finished moving all their stuff into their rooms, we let them know a little bit about Intervarsity and left them a little flyer with our upcoming and weekly events, so hopefully we'll be seeing a good amount of people at our auction tomorrow. The students, parents, RAs, and dorm staff were all very grateful for our help so I think we at least made a good impression of ourselves.

In other news, Phil finally got the t-shirts made. They are black shirts with a blue cross-like printing that says Cooper Union Intervarsity on the front and our vision statement in white on the back. The t-shirts look very nice, so be sure to get one from Phil, the cost has not yet been determined, but will probably be $10.

Finally, the auction is tomorrow at 6, so be sure to help out if you can. Ask Josh for further details.

We believed that God has a purpose for our campus that was way bigger than anything that we could accomplish at the time and knew that God wanted to start His work in a growing community in Cooper that wouldn't die with graduating leaders.
